I have been arranging music for various ensembles for over forty years, and in the cruise business for 26 years
David Hooning is a guitarist, bassist and vocalist who started preparing music arrangements and transcriptions while performing in his Oregon high school’s swing choirs and stage bands. He continued this craft as he went on to study music theory and performance at the University of Oregon.
During and after college, David went into live musical performance as a solo artist and with a wide variety of pop, jazz, Latin and blues ensembles. In every act, he also served as a music arranger and transcriptionist. In addition, he worked two years as arranger and producer for D.S. Tower advertising of Portland, Oregon, where he won several awards for his productions. These experiences honed his musical ear and refined his skill in putting it on paper, so it sounded great and read easily, making rehearsal a breeze and performance a joy.
In 1989, David started a career in cruise ship show bands, which is now more than 26 years. There, he has encountered bigger and more diverse musical situations. He began to meet “real” singers and instrumentalists, magicians, comedians, jugglers and other performers. They have all needed new music for their shows, and David became among the top musical arrangers at tailoring it to “fit like a glove,” while retaining the ease of interpretation that so characterized his earlier efforts.
With this deep background in sheet music arrangement and transcription, David is thoroughly prepared to transcribe and arrange music your way.
